The process works as follows. The first step is to have a discussion to establish rough ideas about the proposed commissions purpose, size colour and budget. I then work to incorporate these factors into a design. This includes likely timber species, cost and approximate time. I then go back to my client with my design and continue to work with them on refining aspects where necessary. Once the design of the piece is approved by my client, I get a deposit and head off to the timber yard. This is where the fun starts. Individual boards are selected, ensuring grain patterns, grain orientation and timber colour are right. Back at the workshop I machine the boards roughly to size then leave them a week or so to release any internal tensions. If all is well (it often isnt )and they have stayed straight, they are cut, planed, jointed and sanded. A dry assembly is done to make sure everything is as intended. At this stage the timber is sealed and an initial coat of oil applied. After final glue up the piece is rubbed with fine steel wool the waxed or oiled as required. It is then admired. And touched.
